How to Calculate Volume

Volume Calculator

What is Volume

Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space a substance or object occupies. When talking about a container, volume can also be describe as the capacity of the container or the amount of liquid a container can hold.

Calculations

Calculating the volume depends on the shape of the object. Each shape has different formulas. See formulas for more information.

Formulas

Rectangular Prism:

V = lwh

Where:
l = length of the Prism
w = width of the Prism
h = height of the Prism
Cube:

V = a³

Where:
a = measurement of one side of the cube

V = πr²h

Where:
π = pi or 3.14159265359
r = radius of the base of cylinder
h = height of the cylinder
Square Pyramid:

V = (1/3)a2h

Where:
a = measurement of base edge of the pyramid
h = height of the pyramid
Rectangular Pyramid:

V = (1/3)lwh

Where:
